This workshop is designed to equip mental health professionals with essential knowledge about the legal landscape that affects their practice in Oklahoma. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the differences between criminal, civil, and administrative law, and how each type influences their professional conduct and decision-making. Through an exploration of the most common reasons for licensure board complaints and civil lawsuits, attendees will learn practical strategies to mitigate risks and protect their licenses.

We will also provide a comprehensive review of the rules and regulations specific to Oklahoma LPCs, LADCs, LCSWs, and LMFTs, ensuring participants are up-to-date with the latest legal requirements. Finally, the workshop will delve into the relationship between self-care and ethical behaviors, emphasizing the importance of maintaining personal well-being to uphold professional standards.

Objectives Include:
1. Participants will learn the difference between criminal, civil, and administrative law and how each type influences their practice.
2. Participants will learn the most common reasons for licensure board complaints and civil lawsuits and ways to guard against each..
3. Participants will discuss the relationship between self-care and ethical behaviors.
Presented by Micah Perkins M.S., L.P.C, L.A.D.C. 
Micah Perkins M.S., L.P.C, L.A.D.C. completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Behavioral Sciences both from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. He is a member of the American Counseling Association, NAADAC- the Association for Addiction Professionals, and is a S.M.A.R.T Recovery facilitator. He is a recognized Certified Reality Therapist from the William Glasser Institute and has completed Advanced Training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York. His experience includes working with children and teens in therapeutic foster care and in acute and residential treatment programs. In addition, he has worked with adults in a community mental health center and in his own private practice. In 2014, he founded Edmond Counseling and Professional Development, LLC, whose mission is to provide evidence-based counseling to children, teens, and adults, training to mental health professionals, and wellness training to organizations.

This course meets criteria for 3 hours of ethics continuing education by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health for Oklahoma LPC and LMFT license holders, by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (provider #20240088) for Oklahoma LCSW license holders, by the Oklahoma Board of Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (certificate #20250018) for LADC and CADC license holders, and for Oklahoma case managers (3 hours ethics CEs). This training will not meet criteria for NBCC credit.
