Legislation Allowing Counselors to See Medicare Patients Passes
On Friday, December 23, 2022, the American Counseling Association announced that the Mental Health Access Improvement Act (H.R. 432/ S. 828) had passed both the House and Senate and was on its way to be signed into law by President Joe Biden. Once signed into law, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) will be allowed to contract with the federal government to be Medicare providers.
The American Counseling Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy had been closely monitoring the legislation. Both are members of the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition, a group of thirteen organizations working together to support passage of the legislation.
