Landmark Recovery Closes Oklahoma City Location

Landmark Recovery, an addiction treatment facility based out of Tennessee, recently closed two facilities, including its Oklahoma City location. According to a Landmark representative, there are no plans to reopen the facility. Learn more on the Oklahoma Counseling Institute website.

 

New Documentary Explores Suicide Risk in Ski Resort Towns

The Paradise Paradox is a newly released documentary that explores how the culture of ski resort towns combined with limited access to health services may contribute to an increased rate of suicide. According to the documentarians, the elevated risk of suicide in the Rocky Mountains has deemed the area the “Suicide Belt” of the United States. Oklahoma State University Partners with Online Therapy Companies to Improve Access to Care

Oklahoma State University’s Student Wellness division has partnered with BetterHelp to offer up to 6 free sessions of mental health therapy to current students. The university is also providing access to Togetherall, a clinician-monitored mental health support platform in which students can process and receive support for mental health struggles. California Law Allows Teens to Pursue Mental Healthcare without Parental Consent

Since 2010, California has allowed minors with private insurance who are at least 12 years of age to pursue outpatient mental healthcare treatment without parent or guardian consent. Earlier this month the law was expanded to include those children on Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program. More than 20 states currently allow minors to pursue outpatient mental healthcare without parent or guardian consent. Learn more on National Public Radio.

 

Maternal Stress May Impact Infant Brain Development

A study on perinatal stress examined the examined the relationship between Hispanic mothers’ exposure to discrimination and infant brain development. One finding from the study indicated that mothers who experienced stress due to discrimination while pregnant typically appeared to give birth to infants with weaker connections between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.
